Google moved your campaigns to AI Max. Three settings to check this week

October 22, 2026 · 6 min read

AI Max for Search bundles three automations: search term matching beyond your keywords, ad text adapted from your site and existing ads, and automatic landing page selection. Google began auto-upgrading campaigns that used Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets or campaign-level broad match in September 2026. Before trusting it, check what counts as a conversion, restrict which URLs it may send traffic to, and review the search terms it adds every few days for the first two weeks.

Google Ads has been moving in one direction for years: fewer manual levers, more decisions made by the system. AI Max for Search is the latest step, and for a lot of advertisers it did not arrive as a choice.

Google took AI Max out of beta in April 2026 and announced that campaigns using Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets or campaign-level broad match would begin auto-upgrading from September. If your account used any of those, check what is switched on now.

What AI Max actually does

Three things that used to be separate:

  • Search term matching. Your keywords become a starting point. The system serves ads on queries it judges to share the same intent, even when the words don’t match.
  • Text customization. It writes headline and description variants from your landing pages and existing ads, aiming to match each query more closely.
  • Final URL expansion. Instead of always sending traffic to the URL you set, it can choose a different page on your site that it considers a better fit.

Google reports conversion lifts at similar cost per acquisition. Those numbers are Google’s own, and early independent accounts are more mixed. What everyone agrees on is that the outcome depends on what you feed it.

When it helps

  • Conversion tracking is clean. Form submissions, qualified calls and purchases count. Page views and button clicks do not.
  • There is enough volume. Dozens of real conversions a month give the system a signal to optimize toward.
  • The website is clear. Each service has its own page with accurate pricing and scope.

In accounts like that, AI Max regularly finds queries nobody would have written into a keyword list, because people search in ways we don’t predict.

When it costs

  • Tracking counts the wrong thing. The system learns to bring people who click rather than people who buy, and “optimization” means cheap, useless traffic.
  • No negative keywords. Expanded matching without an exclusion list puts your ad on queries you would reject on sight.
  • The site is out of date. Old pricing, a service you no longer offer, a promotion that ended. Any of it can end up in generated copy.
  • Wrong landing pages. The system may send paid traffic to a blog post or your About page.

Three checks for this week

1. What counts as a conversion. Under Goals, look at which actions are set as primary. If page views or generic clicks are there, fix that before anything else. The setup is covered in if you can’t tell which ad brought the lead.

2. Where it may send traffic. AI Max has URL controls. Exclude the blog, careers, legal pages and anything that isn’t an offer. If you built dedicated landing pages, restrict it to those.

3. What people actually searched. The search terms report now shows which queries came from AI Max. Check it every few days for the first two weeks and keep adding negatives.

Your website is now part of the campaign

The bigger change is not in the account. When the system writes ads from your site and chooses your pages, the site becomes the source material. A vague service page now produces vague ads.

Before letting AI Max run, read your service pages as a new hire would: is it clear what you do, for whom, at what price, and what the next step is? If not, that is the cheapest optimization available. More on that in your ads are sending people to the wrong page.

Common questions

Can I turn AI Max off?

For most campaigns, yes, in campaign settings. Check before you do: if conversion tracking is accurate, AI Max sometimes finds converting queries you would never have added manually. The reason to switch it off is bad data, not automation as such.

Does AI Max write ads I haven't approved?

It assembles headline and description variants based on your website and existing ads. That makes your website part of the campaign: an outdated price or a discontinued service on the site can surface in an ad. Review the generated assets and exclude what you don't want.

Is AI Max worth it for a small account?

It depends on data volume, not company size. An account recording thirty or more real conversions a month gives the system something to learn from. An account recording five gives it a guess, and guesses are billed per click.
