Traffic down, rankings flat: what AI Overviews did to your site

October 23, 2026 · 7 min read

If your rankings held but clicks fell, the most likely cause is an AI-generated answer sitting above your result. AI Overviews and AI Mode absorb clicks on informational queries such as definitions and how-tos, while local, commercial and transactional searches are far less affected. The fix is not more blog posts: it is fewer generic pages, more pages with your own prices, examples and data, and a measurement model built on leads rather than sessions.

The pattern is familiar by now. Search Console shows impressions holding steady or even growing. Average position barely moves. Clicks drop by a quarter, sometimes more, mostly on the blog.

Nothing is broken. The search result changed shape.

What changed

For a growing share of queries, Google places an AI-generated answer above the organic results. AI Overviews summarize several sources in a paragraph or two. AI Mode goes further and turns the search into a conversation. Either way, the reader often gets what they came for without clicking anything.

Independent trackers disagree on exactly how often these answers appear and how many clicks they absorb, and most of the published numbers come from vendors with something to sell. The direction is consistent, though: informational content has lost the most, and smaller sites that lived on informational content have lost proportionally more than large publishers.

Which pages are exposed

Definitions. “What is a CDN”, “what does a brand strategist do”. If the answer fits in three sentences, the AI will write those three sentences.

How-to guides with a generic answer. “How to choose a domain name” has been written a thousand times. The AI averages the thousand versions and none of them gets the visit.

Listicles. “Ten tips for a better homepage” is the easiest format in the world to summarize.

Which pages are not

Local intent. “Emergency plumber near me” still triggers the map pack, because the reader needs to call someone. AI answers appear on local searches far less often than on informational ones.

Commercial intent. “Web design agency for law firms” or “Shopify developer pricing” is a search for a vendor, not an explanation.

Anything the AI cannot do for the reader. It can explain what a site migration involves. It cannot migrate the site.

What to do differently

Write fewer explainers and more evidence. Replace “What is technical SEO” with “What a technical SEO audit costs and what it found on three real sites”. The first one gets summarized without you. The second contains your numbers, and if an AI uses it, it has to cite you.

Lead with the answer. Every important page should open with a direct two or three sentence answer, then the detail. This blog does exactly that, in the highlighted paragraph under each headline.

Add the questions people actually ask. People type full questions into AI tools. A short FAQ on a service page, written in the words your customers use on sales calls, maps to those queries well.

Build presence off your site. AI systems corroborate. They give weight to reviews, directories, press and third-party mentions. A company that only talks about itself is less likely to be named. We covered this in what decides whether ChatGPT recommends you.

Measure leads, not sessions

Rank tracking alone now gives a misleading picture. A page can hold position one and lose half its clicks to the answer above it.

Watch three numbers together: impressions, clicks and qualified leads. If impressions grow and clicks fall while leads hold steady, you have lost visitors who were never going to buy. That is uncomfortable on a traffic dashboard and irrelevant on a P&L.

If leads are falling too, the problem is usually that your commercial pages are thin and your informational pages were doing the selling. That is fixable, and it is where we would start. The difference between optimizing for rankings and optimizing for citations is laid out in GEO and SEO are not the same thing.

Common questions

How can I tell if AI Overviews are taking my clicks?

In Google Search Console, compare impressions and clicks for the same pages over time. If impressions are flat or rising while clicks fall, people are seeing you but getting their answer before the click. The pattern shows up first on posts that answer general questions.

Is SEO still worth paying for?

Yes, but the brief changes. AI answers draw heavily on pages that already rank well, so technical foundations still matter. What no longer works is ranking a generic explainer and expecting the click. The work shifts toward pages that answer commercial questions and contain information only you can provide.

Will getting cited in an AI Overview bring the traffic back?

Partly. Being one of the cited sources keeps your brand in front of the reader, and some will click through for detail. It rarely restores the old volume on informational queries. Treat citations as visibility and measure their value in leads, not sessions.
